Vision and Mission

our Vision

All across New York City, thousands of people are engaged in community-led, cooperative initiatives to survive and thrive in the face of skyrocketing rents, unaffordable prices and an ongoing displacement crisis.

These democratically-governed community groups are operating worker-owned businesses, managing community gardens, developing and maintaining affordable housing and putting people and the planet above profit.

These cooperative efforts build wealth, well-being and community self-determination, block by block across the city.

And by participating in a city-wide network of values-aligned groups, we are building our collective power to divest from the dominant capitalist economy and to invest in a solidarity economy: a more equitable and climate-resilient future that serves us all, not just the wealthy few.

our Mission

The Cooperative Economics Alliance of NYC (CEANYC) was formed in 2015 to strengthen and expand a solidarity economy movement. We forge a shared strategy and identity amongst community-led, democratically-controlled initiatives across NYC.

Often led by low-income women of color and immigrants, democratically-governed, community-led groups face an uphill battle in New York City’s competitive, capitalist economy.  With these challenges in mind, CEANYC creates opportunities for members to coordinate economically and reduce their reliance on the profit-driven economy. We provide our members with political education and access to resources; we expand and deepen their connections; and we champion the ways they make our city more just.

We are proud to support our members and to contribute to a growing movement, across the country and the world, to build a future that is equitable, inclusive, and sustainable for all.
