cooperative Economics Alliance

of new york city

Hey there 😍

The Cooperative Economics Alliance of NYC (CEANYC — pronounced “see-nick”) brings together hundreds of cooperative, community-led groups to build economic and political power and secure a just, climate-resilient future for all New Yorkers.

We are part of the growing movement in New York—and across the world—working cooperatively to meet people’s needs, with community-driven solutions for how we eat, house ourselves, care for each other, manage our finances, and much more.

What We Do

educate and train

We offer bilingual English/Spanish participatory workshops and intensives for leaders of member groups, where we share tools, practice skills, develop political analysis, and build movement power.

Grounded Assessment

We track the diverse cooperative projects under way in every neighborhood of New York in order to share lessons, uplift stories and develop resources for mutual learning and coordination.

make economic matches

We facilitate economic partnerships and political alignment between member groups, building foundational connections for a solidarity economy.

strengthen Connections

We bring member groups together to deepen relationships, root their work in solidarity economy principles, and coordinate economic activity across sectors.

what is
cooperative

economics?

We believe a cooperative economy should not be about exploiting or profiting off of one another. A cooperative economy should be about meeting our common needs. That’s why there is a growing movement for cooperative economics, building projects and institutions grounded in democracy, economic and racial justice, environmental sustainability and solidarity—all by putting relationships at the heart of economics.

With its long history of social movements, New York City has a uniquely rich cooperative and democratic landscape, with more than 2,000 groups. CEANYC’s vibrant network includes community gardens, worker-owned cooperatives, affordable housing co-ops, community-controlled internet and more.

You can learn more about these community-driven models on our Resources page. And if you’re in New York, find a cooperative project near you, by checking out our “Seeding Solidarity” Map, which highlights creative ways that community members are putting people and planet over profit — across all five boroughs.
